The endless, pounding heat that anyone living in the South has experienced this summer is enough to make anyone lose their mind. After a while, even air conditioning isn’t enough to make you feel comfortable.
So we asked CBS News science and technology correspondent Daniel Sieberg to show us what’s on the market right now that will put a smile on the faces of our deep-fried Southern friends — or anyone sweltering during summer’s dog days.
Here are his suggestions:
FirstStreet Online Kool-Down Air Cooler ($20): Although it’s only about the size of a clock-radio, this portable unit is able to keep your personal space comfortable for hours. If you’re at a desk or sitting outdoors, it will immediately cool, moist air in your direction. (It won’t, however, cool a room). It is cordless and uses only four “C” batteries and a glass of water to keep the air around you comfortable and humidified. (www.firststreetonline.com)
FirstStreet Online Self-Cooling Seat Cushion ($50): According to the company, the seat cushion is made from natural mineral crystals specifically chosen for their unique cooling properties. This means it’s not plugged in and does not require batteries, so you can take it anywhere you’ll be hanging out (like an outdoor stadium, for example). It’s also a good addition to a wheelchair. Lacrosse Technology Wireless Temperature Station ($39.95): If you’re one of those people who feels better knowing just what’s going on outside, then this gadget will either give you hope, or make you want to stay indoors. And in addition to giving you the weather (and the humidity, indoors and out), it also has an icon that will tell you how to dress for the weather (no style tips, though, alas). Hammacher Cool Mist Umbrella ($200): This umbrella might be pricey, but it’s hard not to look at it without thinking, “Aahhhhh.” It’s a large umbrella that provides a constant mist from nozzles built into three of its support ribs. It’s enough to cool down the air, but not enough to make you wet. It doesn’t require any special equipment beyond a hooked-up garden hose. (www.hammacher.com)
Hammock Company Combo ($700): If you’re stuck in an urban environment but want to imagine you’re lazing on a hammock between two tall trees, this is the splurge for you. This hammock (currently on sale) comes with a hammock stand, a pillow and a rope hammock. Close your eyes, sway in the breeze and think cool thoughts. (www.hammock-company.com)
